A different metal does not create a new tax category
Silver IRA is a descriptive name for an IRA holding eligible silver. It does not create a separate tax regime. Traditional and Roth distinctions remain relevant, and the custodian must accept the assets and funding. A kit may introduce silver without being the account agreement or the documents needed for an actual purchase.
Begin by identifying whether you want general rules, a company's explanation or a product quote. Those are different requests. If you want rules without a follow-up sales process, our official PDF reading list includes IRS publications and the joint CFTC/FINRA metals bulletin. No company kit is needed to read them.
Which recorded offers mention silver
The recorded Goldco information-offer name is Free 'Gold & Silver Kit' / Ultimate Guide to Gold & Silver. The recorded Augusta name is Free Gold & Silver IRA Info Kit (2026 Gold IRA Guide, 4 guides). These names come from the company information checked, rather than receipt of sample packages. The original offer checks are dated October 29, 2026; we read the linked public offer pages for this article on October 31.
A title mentioning silver supports the offer description. It does not establish which chapters, products, fee schedules or application forms are in the current package. Ask the company whether its present material explains silver-specific pricing and storage. We have not verified a complete contents list or delivery format for either offer.
Read our Goldco kit notes or Augusta kit notes for the existing offer discussion. The separate Goldco company profile supplies broader seller context. The Rank Sheet is our sister site; we may earn a commission if you sign up with a company through it. Neither publication has tested receipt of these packages.
Read the silver exception precisely
Section 408(m) generally treats metals and coins as collectibles, with exceptions. Section 408(m)(3)(A) includes specified silver coins minted under 31 U.S.C. 5112(e), as well as other described coin categories. Section 408(m)(3)(B) supplies the qualifying-bullion route with a fineness test and trustee-possession condition.
The familiar silver bullion threshold is .999, or 99.9% fine. A 2006 exchange filing on the SEC website, printed page 14, describes COMEX silver bars as requiring at least .999 fineness. The statute refers to contract-market standards rather than simply printing a universal shopping list of retail silver products. Confirm the current applicable standard with the receiving custodian.
The separate coin route matters, too. Do not apply one simplified bullion rule as if it describes every statutory exception. Conversely, a legal-tender description does not automatically establish the specific exception a product uses. Ask the seller and custodian to identify the exact item and the basis for acceptance.
A purity stamp is a starting point
Request the full product name, issuer or refiner, weight, fineness and proposed quantity. Ask whether the quote concerns coins, rounds or bars and whether substitutions are allowed. A photograph can illustrate an item without specifying the order. Do not approve a purchase solely because the picture shows a purity mark.
The custodian should confirm acceptance of the exact product before the order. Keep that answer beside the dealer's itemized quote. If a different product is offered later, repeat the check. A higher fineness figure cannot resolve questions about identity, account acceptance, custody or the amount charged.
Publication 590-B describes the IRA collectibles restriction and exceptions. A disallowed collectible can create a distribution issue rather than simply remaining an unusual investment. Ask a tax professional about uncertain items or plans involving personal possession before giving instructions.
Ask for silver-specific pricing
A general explanation of precious metals is not a silver quote. Obtain the exact product price and a same-day repurchase quote for the same items. Record the fine-metal content and total quantity so you can compare like with like. A premium on one product and a bid for another are not a meaningful pair.
The joint CFTC/FINRA bulletin addresses both gold and silver. It warns about poorly explained spreads, collector-style pitches and costs that need to be obtained in writing. Do not assume that a kit using both metal names gives you a comparable quote for both.
The fee guide at our sister publication can help distinguish account charges from metal pricing. Ask whether a proposed storage charge depends on the arrangement or holdings and which written schedule supplies it. We do not supply a default silver storage amount or assume it matches a gold example.
Custody remains a separate check
Ask who administers the IRA, where the metal is held and how its identity and quantity appear in account records. Silver's eligible status does not permit the owner to arrange personal possession outside the account's rules. A seller describing the process as simple still needs to identify the responsible institutions.
Keep the account agreement, product quote and storage terms together. Check whether they describe the same items and custody arrangement. Ask how a future sale is processed, which party sets a bid and what charges apply. A buyback-policy heading does not establish a fixed price or an obligation to transact.
Use the kit to close specific gaps
Mark which questions the material actually answers and which require another document. If the package contains only general explanations, ask for a silver-specific product quote and the applicable schedules rather than assuming they will resemble its examples. Our comparison worksheet is useful for recording the answers you receive.
The wider provider comparison is optional commercial reading once the account and product questions are clear. This page does not choose an allocation or predict metal prices. The useful outcome of a silver kit can be a precise document request, with the purchase decision left open until the terms are understood.
The practical next step
Ask whether the current material actually covers silver, then obtain an exact product quote and custodian acceptance. A combined kit title does not verify its chapter list or the proposed purchase.
