Begin with an order file, not a ranking
This checklist is for the point when research has become a specific proposal. You should have named parties, an account arrangement and a product quote to examine. If you are still gathering introductory material, start with questions to ask after the kit arrives and return here when documents arrive.
The joint CFTC/FINRA metals bulletin recommends written charges and price checks before signing or paying. Use that as the standard for a completed file. A representative's offer to explain missing terms later does not make the present order reviewable.
Create separate places for the IRA agreement, current fee schedules, storage terms, dealer quote and repurchase policy. Note the issuing entity and date on each. The task is to see whether these documents describe one consistent transaction, rather than collect enough paper to feel reassured.
Check the legal parties and account title
Match the seller's legal name on the purchase agreement with the firm whose quote you received. Identify the custodian in the IRA agreement and the proposed depository in the custody documents. Confirm traditional or Roth status and the receiving-account details directly with the custodian.
The SEC's self-directed IRA alert cautions that custodians generally do not investigate investment quality or legitimacy. A known custodian therefore does not finish your dealer check. Verify each party and understand which agreement makes it responsible for which task.
The broader company comparison at The Rank Sheet supplies commercial background. The Rank Sheet is our sister site; we may earn a commission if you sign up with a company through it. Use the profiles to identify matters to investigate; the name on your contract and the actual written obligations remain the documents that matter to this order.
Read the complete account fee schedule
Request setup, administration and storage amounts separately, identifying whether each is one-time or recurring. Then check for transaction, wire, shipping, insurance, closure and distribution charges that could apply. Ask whether quoted storage is already included in another line so you do not count it twice.
If fees are temporarily covered or waived, obtain the conditions, duration and charges payable afterward. Keep the underlying schedule even when someone else initially pays a fee. Do not treat a promotional summary as proof that every charge is covered or that product pricing is unchanged.
The separate comparison of account charges can help organize the categories. Copy into your decision file only the amounts that apply to the proposed custodian and storage arrangement. A different provider's example should remain outside the total for your quote.
Specify exactly what the dealer would sell
The proposed order should identify every product and quantity, with weight, purity and issuer or refiner as appropriate. Match that list to the custodian's written acceptance. Section 408(m)(3) supplies the relevant coin and bullion exceptions, but the custodian still needs to accept the actual item.
Ask whether the quote permits substitutions and how approval would work. A photograph or family name is not always a complete product specification. If the final order changes an item, repeat the acceptance and pricing checks for the replacement rather than carrying forward assumptions from the original.
Our coin-and-bar check explains why a purity statement and an eligibility conclusion are different. Publication 3125 adds that the IRS does not approve individual investments. Do not let an eligibility label end the purchase review.
Compare price and repurchase on equal terms
Request the total purchase price and a same-day repurchase quote for the same products and quantities. Record how long each quote applies and whether any charges are outside it. Ask how the seller defines spread, markup or premium; those terms can refer to different comparisons.
A premium over a metal reference price is different from the gap between the seller's purchase and repurchase prices. Do not put two percentages side by side without recording their bases. A percentage without a definition is an open question, not a complete pricing answer.
FINRA's physical-metals guidance warns about pressure and costs. A quote that cannot be understood without a long oral explanation needs a clearer written version. Do not approve an order while hoping its meaning will become clearer afterward.
Make storage terms match the quoted fee
Check whether the proposal is segregated or commingled and how the holding is identified. Ask what insurance and inventory records are described by the actual agreement, who issues release instructions, and which party you contact about a discrepancy. The storage fee is meaningful only with those terms attached.
Confirm that shipment will follow the custodian's instructions. Do not substitute home delivery for account storage without independent tax advice about a distribution. Our custodian and dealer guide helps assign each storage question to the party able to document it.
Read the exit terms before the entry order
A buyback heading may describe a service rather than a binding obligation to purchase. Ask who can decline, how a bid is determined and whether fees for dealer handling, custody processing or shipment apply. Check whether account proceeds remain inside the IRA or are being requested as a distribution.
Also read cancellation, dispute and final-order provisions. Identify when an order becomes binding and how to correct a mistake. If a representative's explanation differs from the agreement, ask the responsible party for written clarification before signing. Do not assume the friendlier version controls.
Compare the file without inventing the gaps
Use our kit comparison worksheet to place your recorded amounts and missing terms side by side. It adds only the setup, annual administration and annual storage amounts you enter. That explicit-fee sum excludes product pricing and other charges, so it cannot select the cheapest or most suitable provider.
If considering Goldco, the separate company profile is additional background. Ask an independent tax professional about your own funding or distribution questions. The final buying test is whether the documents make the specific transaction understandable; an incomplete file remains incomplete even after a long research process.
The practical next step
Approve only the order you can match to current account, storage and pricing documents. An unresolved conflict belongs on the question list, even if every other item is complete.
