Use the brochure as a question list
Read the kit with a blank page beside it. Write down each statement that needs a specific document or quote. The aim is to understand the transaction being proposed, rather than decide whether you like the brochure's presentation. Keep the answers with the original material so you can compare providers on the same basis.
The contents of the individual kits are not fully verified in our record. We do not assume they contain a fee schedule, agreement or personalized recommendation. If something is missing, ask for it. A polished brochure is not evidence that the missing question has a favorable answer.
Who is doing each job?
Ask: who sells the metal, who administers the IRA and who holds the metal in storage? Request the full name of each party and the agreement that covers its role. Ask which company you contact for a service problem and which party supplies statements. Read the company profile for Goldco as background, then ask the representative to name the parties proposed for your account.
Then ask how instructions pass between those parties. If a salesperson describes the process as a single service, you should still know which separate entities have obligations. Keep the dealer's explanation distinct from the custodian's account terms.
What would I pay, and to whom?
Request setup, annual administration and storage charges separately. Ask about transaction, wire, termination and other charges that could apply. Ask whether the proposed storage is segregated or non-segregated and which current schedule supplies the figure. The fee comparison for Goldco can sit beside your checklist; the applicable schedule must still come from the provider.
Goldco’s fee example illustrates why dates matter. It lists $50 setup and $125 annual administration in the company's fee example, while the current Equity Trust schedule lists $110 non-segregated or $160 segregated storage. Older company storage figures differ. Ask for the applicable current schedule instead of combining numbers from different documents.
How is the metal priced?
Ask for the precise product name, quantity and purchase price. Ask for a same-day repurchase quote for those same items, with any charges separately identified. Ask how long the quote remains valid and what would change it. Do not compare unlike products as if their prices described the same purchase.
We found no published numerical spread for Goldco or Augusta in the sources checked. We do not estimate one. That gap is exactly why a written product-specific quote matters. A low administration charge cannot answer the product-pricing question.
How does storage work?
Ask where the proposed metal would be held, which storage arrangement is quoted, and what records you would receive. Ask how insurance and access are described in the storage agreement. If a company offers more than one arrangement, ask for the cost and terms of the one actually proposed.
The IRS material linked below explains the collectibles rules and exceptions for certain precious metals. Do not assume that physical metal can be handled the same way as an ordinary purchase outside an IRA. Talk to a tax professional about the rules that apply to your account.
What happens if I want to sell?
Ask whether either party is obliged to transact, how a buyback quote is calculated and which charges apply. Ask who processes the instruction and how proceeds reach the account. A general promise of support is not the same as a documented repurchase obligation.
Augusta's recorded terms say buyback is not obligatory on either side. Its absence of a separate dealer liquidation fee does not resolve every custodian charge. For any provider, request the full process in writing rather than assuming a brochure's buyback headline covers the details.
What do I need to check outside the sales call?
Ask your existing plan administrator about its distribution or transfer procedures. Ask the receiving custodian what it accepts and which forms it needs. Talk to a tax professional about your own transaction before issuing instructions. Keep the kit as background material, not as authority to move funds. If comparing sellers, start with the broader company comparison and put the same unanswered questions to each one.
Finally, mark unanswered questions clearly. If a representative needs to check something, leave it open until the document arrives. You can pause without replacing an unknown with a favorable assumption. The value of the checklist is that it makes those gaps visible.
Turn answers into a document checklist
Beside each question, write the document that would answer it: a custodian schedule, storage agreement, product quote or buyback terms. Add the issuing party and date when you receive it. This makes it easier to see where the representative's explanation has supporting terms and where another answer is still needed. Keep an unanswered question visible even if the rest of the material looks complete.
Read the documents together for inconsistencies. If the quoted storage arrangement differs from the brochure's example, ask which charge applies and why. If buyback language changes between an overview and the agreement, ask the seller to identify its actual obligation. Do not resolve a conflict by choosing whichever version sounds better. Get a written clarification from the party responsible.
Our affiliate terms explain the paid buttons on this page; the company controls any form and subsequent contact. Completing the checklist is a research step. For instructions about an existing account, contact its administrator, and discuss your individual tax questions with a tax professional before deciding whether to proceed.
The practical next step
Leave any unanswered fee, pricing, storage or buyback question open until the relevant document arrives. A useful call ends with terms you can review, not just reassuring explanations.
