401(k) to Gold IRA Rollover: Check the Route First

How do you roll a 401(k) into a gold IRA?

A 401(k)-to-gold-IRA rollover requires an eligible plan distribution and a receiving IRA that accepts it. A direct rollover sends the payment to the receiving account; payment to you personally generally creates withholding and a 60-day redeposit deadline. Confirm the account tax types and plan instructions before choosing any metal.

Check whether money is available to move

Ask the 401(k) administrator whether the plan permits the distribution you are considering and whether it qualifies for rollover treatment. Leaving an employer can matter, but a seller should not decide plan eligibility from your age or account balance alone. Obtain the current plan instructions and the explanation of rollover options.

The IRS rollover guidance lists payments that cannot be rolled over, including required minimum distributions and hardship distributions. Ask the administrator to identify any amount that falls outside the eligible portion. A general statement that a plan balance can move is not enough for a particular distribution.

Our existing rollover-kit article explains the brochure's limited role. This guide addresses the account-to-account paperwork instead. Neither page recommends moving money from your plan; leaving it there or using another available arrangement may also deserve review with an independent adviser.

Read source and destination together

Open the IRS rollover chart. Identify whether the source is a pre-tax qualified plan or a designated Roth account. Then choose the receiving traditional or Roth IRA column and read the footnotes. There is no separate gold column: the metal investment comes after the account-tax classification.

Pre-tax money moved into a Roth IRA can be taxable. Designated Roth plan money cannot simply be routed into a traditional IRA because a dealer uses the same gold IRA name for both. After-tax funds, outstanding loans or mixed tax sources require more specific handling. Have the plan and a tax professional review those features before you complete instructions.

Ask the receiving custodian whether it accepts the proposed rollover and what documentation it needs. An account must be established with the correct tax designation and receiving details. A dealer's minimum purchase size does not settle either administrator's requirements.

Direct rollover: use the receiving account's instructions

In a direct rollover, the plan makes payment to the receiving retirement plan or IRA. The IRS says the administrator may issue a check payable to the new account. That means a check passing through your hands can still be direct if its payee is the receiving account rather than you personally.

Obtain the exact payee wording and any account-reference instructions from the receiving custodian, then confirm them with the plan. Independently verify changes to payment details. Do not substitute a metal dealer's operating account for the IRA receiving instructions. Funding a retirement account and paying a seller are separate events.

The rollover explanation from The Rank Sheet offers additional background. The Rank Sheet is our sister site; we may earn a commission if you sign up with a company through it. The administrators' own current documents remain the operational instructions; an explanatory article should not be copied into a payment form.

Payment to you personally: understand withholding first

The IRS says an eligible retirement-plan distribution paid to the participant is generally subject to mandatory 20% withholding. If you later want to roll over the full eligible gross amount, the withheld portion must be replaced from other funds. Simply depositing the net payment does not necessarily roll over the whole distribution.

A 60-day rollover generally must be completed within 60 days of receiving the distribution. Missing that deadline can have tax consequences. Waiver or relief provisions have conditions; do not build a plan around the assumption that relief will be available. If payment has already occurred, contact a tax professional promptly with the actual dates and records.

This page does not calculate an individual's tax or tell readers to use an indirect route. It explains why deciding the payment method before issuance is valuable. Once a distribution payable to you has been made, correcting a misunderstanding can be more complicated than clarifying the payee in advance.

Keep the one-rollover rule in its proper scope

The IRS describes a one-per-year limitation for IRA-to-IRA rollovers, aggregating the person's IRAs. It explicitly lists plan-to-IRA rollovers and trustee-to-trustee IRA transfers among transactions outside that limitation. Do not apply the IRA-to-IRA rule indiscriminately to a 401(k) rollover.

Equally, being outside that limit does not make every payment eligible or every destination appropriate. Distribution eligibility, tax classification and receiving-account acceptance still need checking. Publication 590-A provides further discussion of moving retirement-plan assets; read it for the relevant account type and edition.

Confirm arrival before authorizing a purchase

Ask the receiving custodian how it confirms that funds were credited and are available. Keep its confirmation with the plan's sending record. Check the amount and the account tax designation. If something differs, resolve it with the administrators before treating the rollover step as finished.

Only then consider a separate metal order. Request the exact products, written purchase price, custody arrangement and repurchase terms. The account-fee discussion at our sister publication can help organize custodian and storage questions, but it cannot supply the dealer's product-specific quote.

Preserve the reporting trail

Keep distribution documents, payment evidence and receiving-account confirmations. Ask the administrators which tax forms to expect, including Form 1099-R and the receiving IRA's reporting. A transaction intended as a nontaxable rollover can still require correct tax-return reporting. Give the records to the person preparing the return rather than assuming no tax means no paperwork.

Publication 590-B provides distribution context. The SEC self-directed IRA alert adds a separate caution: legitimate custody does not validate the investment selected. A completed rollover is therefore not evidence that a particular metal purchase is sound.

If researching Goldco, the commercial profile is separate company reading. Use our buyer document checklist before signing an order. The rollover can be correctly processed while the product price still needs careful review; those decisions should stay distinct.

The practical next step

Confirm eligibility and payee instructions with both administrators before issuing a rollover instruction. Keep funding approval separate from any dealer purchase authorization.

Questions before you request

Does a kit request start a 401(k) rollover?

No. An information request does not instruct your plan administrator or establish a receiving IRA. The actual transaction requires separate account and distribution documents.

Does the one-per-year IRA rule bar every plan rollover?

The IRS says the one-per-year IRA-to-IRA rollover limit does not apply to plan-to-IRA rollovers. That does not remove distribution eligibility or other requirements.

Is a check I physically receive always indirect?

No. A check payable to the receiving plan or IRA can be part of a direct rollover. Confirm the exact payee rather than judging by who handles the envelope.

Can a hardship distribution be rolled over?

The IRS lists hardship distributions among retirement-plan payments that are not eligible rollover distributions. Ask the plan to classify the proposed payment.

Does a direct route make a Roth conversion untaxed?

No. Payment routing does not remove tax consequences when previously untaxed funds move to a Roth IRA. Have a tax professional review a conversion first.
